Michelle Moersfelder is an Associate General Counsel at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and provides a full range of legal support to the foundation’s Global Development, Global Growth and Opportunities, and Global Policy and Advocacy Programs. She focuses her work on properly structuring, making and monitoring the foundation’s grants, program-related investments (PRIs), and advocacy activities. She also manages the foundation’s compliance with tax and other domestic and foreign laws applicable to private foundations and the activities of NGOs abroad, with a focus on India.
Prior to joining the foundation, Michelle was an attorney with the law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP where she provided tax counsel to a range of domestic and international private equity clients and exempt organizations.
Michelle is a board member of the Endowment for Equal Justice, a non-profit that raises, invests and contributes funds to resolve the civil legal aid challenges facing Washington families and to change systems and policies that perpetuate poverty. She is also the Co-Chair of the Endowment’s Reach 20 Initiative to grow the endowment to $20 million by 2020 so it can provide at least $1 million a year of sustainable funding to legal aid in Washington.
Michelle received a B.S., from the University of Central Florida, a J.D., from the George Washington University School of Law, and an LL.M. in Taxation, from New York University Law School.
